Monday Morning
Roughly 24 hours from now I'll be discussing results of my CT scan with my oncologist. Am trying to fend off anxiety about this. After all, I'll be getting CT scans every three months for the next two years, according to the protocol for the clinical trial in which I am participating. Am going to pull out my meditation cushion and sit myself down for half an hour, but just thought I'd check in with you beforehand. I'm feeling a little stronger each day, though still fighting a running battle with the blues. I guess that's natural, but it feels really strange. Will write again tomorrow, when there's something more concrete to report. Love to all.

Can't decide if this poem is the right one, I also love 'Mockingbirds'. I find Oliver's poems so comforting. Love Sallie
The Journey
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice--
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do--
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Just think ahead. Summer's coming, and Tom and I are SO looking forward to your visit out here in Portland.
xoxox (I never know whether to end with a kiss or a hug, but we send you lots of both.)

I so want you to hear good news regarding the CT scan. You've handled these rounds of treatment so well that I can only think that they've done what they should. You deserve to be in the good news lane of this journey.
